What does dog friendly travel with Total Overland look like?

Explore Australia Without Leaving Your Best Friend Behind

For years, pet parents have faced the exact same dilemma when planning an overland adventure: how do you experience Australia’s best scenery, iconic attractions, and breathtaking national parks when your dog isn’t allowed?

Too many travelers have had to miss out on incredible destinations, turn around at national park borders, or cut trips short because leaving their dog at home, with friends, or in a kennel simply isn't an option. We believe you shouldn't have to choose between exploring the great outdoors and bringing your four-legged family member along.

We built the first true solution to this problem—bringing you Australia’s first and only tag-along tour company providing dedicated, fully curated pet-friendly tours.

Experienced Hands: Meet Your Dedicated "Pet Guide"

When you leave your dog in the care of our team, you can rest easy knowing they are with a seasoned professional who truly understands dogs inside and out.

Our primary Pet Guide brings over 25 years of hands-on experience in the pet industry:

  • 10+ Years of Professional Canine Transport: Over a decade spent driving show dogs for exhibitors right across Australia—covering hundreds of thousands of kilometres transporting, grooming, and caring for high-value show dogs in peak condition.

  • Active Dog Exhibitor: An active breeder and exhibitor who continues to travel the country competing with their own Basset Hounds and Havanese.

  • Experienced Groomer & Pet Sitter: With extensive backgrounds as a professional dog groomer and in-house pet sitter, your dog isn't just monitored—they receive expert care, gentle handling, and attentive company throughout the journey.

How We Cater to Your Pet: A Uniquely Curated Experience

Our tours are built around a fully curated pet experience. Every destination, track, and stop is chosen with purpose to make the journey as enjoyable and stress-free for your pet as it is for you.

To make this seamless, Total Overland Tours uses a unique two-vehicle and two-guide system, featuring our purpose-built, climate-controlled doggie daycare trailer.

On-the-Go Doggie Daycare Trailer & Dual-Guide Support

When the main tour heads into areas where dogs cannot go—such as National Park tracks, wildlife hazards, non-dog-friendly attractions, or places offering only bare outdoor kennels—you don't have to miss out or worry.

While you explore with the main tour leader, our experienced Pet Guide takes charge of your furry family members:

  • Comfort & Safety First: Your pet travels in style in their comfortable, assigned cabin inside our climate-controlled trailer, following a safe, pet-friendly route to the next campsite.

  • Fun & Care Included: Throughout the day, your dogs receive regular walks, play time, toilet breaks, and snacks.

  • Photo Updates: We send you regular photos and updates during the day, so you can see that your pup is having just as much fun as you are!

  • Reunite at Camp: When you arrive at camp each evening, your furry friend will be waiting for you, ready to spend the night together relaxing in your tent or swag.

On-Demand Flexibility Throughout the Trip

Our mobile doggie daycare trailer stays available to you and your dog throughout the entire journey.

  • Supply Runs Made Safe: Need to duck into the local supermarket for supplies? No worries—your dog doesn't have to wait in a hot car with the risk of heatstroke. They can rest securely in their assigned climate-controlled cabin.

  • Sightseeing Freedom: Use the daycare trailer during stops at local galleries, museums, or cultural displays where pets aren't allowed inside.

What About Remote or High-Risk Trips?

Some of Australia's most beautiful tracks are simply too remote or dangerous for dogs to join the convoy. For these specific adventures, we offer tailored options so you can still hit the trail with peace of mind:

  • Reduced Rate or even Free (Tour Dependant) Hideaway Camp Kennel Stay: When possible, we accommodate our guests' pets at our own pet-friendly property—featuring 400 acres of Mallee wilderness on the Eyre Peninsula. Your dog will stay in a secure, snake-proofed kennel with insulated roofing and access to a large play area. Weather permitting, we take them on enrichment walks around the property and send you daily photos and updates.

  • Trusted Kennel Recommendations: On trips where our guides must all be on the road at once, we provide trusted recommendations for high-quality kennels around the country to ensure your pet is well cared for while you are on the track.
